Hello Lesley, I hope that by now, maybe you have found your mother, but if not, I would like to sugest to you that you post again, and include the county in which Gates Head and Evesham is. My family is from Kent, and I was actually adopted by Appleby's. In America (where I live now) we have a group called ALMA, I do not know if it is worldwide, but you might try looking for it on the internet. It might be A.L.M.A.
Also, www.rootsweb.com have an APPLEBY surname page, as do a lot of genealogy lists. Also try google.com and type in Adoption and related words and see what you come up with.
