My family tree currently stops at Thomas and I would love for it to go back futher if anybody can help me. My Grandfather lost contact with his family as a young man and so it would be nice also to get details of the descendents of his brothers and sisters. We know that Miranda is now my Grandfather's only surviving sibling.

- Applebys of Old Lyme, CT and Brooklyn, NY, USA -- Mary-Agnes Bornhoeft, 16:44:26 06/30/04 Wed
John F. APPLEBY was born in Old Lyme, Connecticut in 1822 and died there in 1896. He was married to Emily S. ROBBINS, born 1825, also of Old Lyme, on August 1, 1841 by the Rev. D.S. Brainard. The 1850 US Census reveals that John F. APPLEBY's occupation was "farmer" and that he and Emily had several children at that time: John Henry (my great-great grandfather) b. 1843; Harriet, b. 1845; Nelson, b. 1848; and Martha, b. 1849. Further research reveals children born after this date, several of whom died young.
John H. APPLEBY fought in the Civil War as a private in Co. C of the 26th Regiment of Connecticut Volunteers. He enlisted on Aug. 29, 1862, and was honorably discharged on Aug. 17, 1863. John H. APPLEBY married Annie GILL, b. 1844 in England, in Old Lyme in either January or June of 1865. Their first child, Margaret APPLEBY, my great-grandmother, was born in Old Lyme on Nov. 1 in either 1865 or 1866. At some point John moved his family to Brooklyn, NY and worked as a fireman. They had at least three other children: Thomas; Edward, b. 1874; and Zoie, b. July 1, 1881 in Brooklyn. After Annie Gill APPLEBY died in Brooklyn on Nov. 29, 1887, John married Elizabeth, an Irish immigrant widow, on March 16, 1889. John died on Nov. 7, 1891 in Brooklyn. His second wife abandoned 10-year old Zoie, who was taken in by John's eldest daughter, Margaret, now married to English immigrant Henry FLETCHER, and who had three children of her own at this point.
Margaret APPLEBY and HENRY FLETCHER eventually had seven children, among whom was my grandmother, Margaret FLETCHER, born in Brooklyn in 1894.

I am looking for my grandfather. All I know is that his name was Walter Lee Appleby and he either lived or was visiting Jacksonville, Illnois in 1899-1900. (My father was born in 1900; we do not know if his parents were married. My grandmother Clara Coffman would have been 17.) I did some research and found a Peter Appleby and a Robert Appleby living in Jacksonville around that time, but can not find any reference to Walter. It was a small town and he must have been related to them somehow. I remember being told that he came from England. Does anyone have any information??? HELP. Thanks.

Has anyone researched the family of Henry Arthur APPLEBY of St. Andrews, Guernsey, Channel Islands? My great-aunt, Ada Mary BURNETT, married Henry (called Harry) November 22, 1899 in Freemantle, Hampshire, England. Henry's father was a William APPLEBY. Both were gardeners and residents of St. Andrews, Guernsey, C.I. (given as Henry's birth place in parish marriage information). Ada and Henry (Harry) appear on the 1901 census for Guernsey, C.I. as well as their first born son, William (b. about November 1900). They had two more sons whose names I do not know. From a 1919 photo there appears to be 6-8 years between William and the second son and 2-4 years between the second and third son. I am interested in any bits of birth/marriage/death information that anyone may be able to provide on this family.

Charles was married to Eleanor(Nellie) and they had ( I think) 4 sons and 1 daughter. The sons were named Reggie, Raymond, Kenneth(who was killed in the war ) and Denis. Kathleen was brought up by her aunt until she was about 16 or so. In the 1940s Uncle Charlie and Auntie Nellie ran a trucking business, which was later run by their son Denis. - JOSEPH APPLEBY -- Daphne Eyers, 16:46:08 06/04/03 Wed
Further to my earlier message :- according to 41, 51 and 71 censuses for Hackney Joseph was born about 1811/12, in Warwickshire at Moreton/Marton/Meriden? (difficult to decipher and the county was spelt Warrickshair). When some of his children were baptised his name was given as George and on his death certificate his name was William Joseph!
On the IGI there is a Joseph Appleby b.25-3-1812, bp 11-6-1813 at St. Phillip's, Birmingham, son of Samuel and Hannah. They also appear to have had 3 other children - William (bp 5-10 1809), Sarah (26-12-1814) and George (27-7-1818). There is a marriage for Samuel Appleby and Hannah Worrall at All Saints, West Bromwich on 7-1-1805 and a baptism for a Samuel at St Matthews, Walsall, parents Humphrey and Sarah. While Joseph and his wife Margaret did not name any of their children Samuel or Hannah they did have a Sarah, William and George.
There is also a baptism for a William Appleby, 25-1-1813, at Saint Martin's, Birmingham, parents James and Maria, who also appear to have had children Clarinda and George.
Does anyone know anything about these families that may help me decide if either Joseph or William is my 2xgt grandfather? In 1835 my Joseph married Margaret Hutchins at Shoreditch and lived the rest of his life in the Hackney area.

- Michael Appleby - Cordwainer of Darlington circa 1600's ....... -- Colin Appleby, 17:07:28 09/05/03 Fri
Extracts from The Leather Industry from c. 1600 Darlington County Durham by Gillian Cookson.
The 1574 agreement, periodically reaffirmed with a free dinner of the company, was signed by master cordwainers and by one representative of the curriers. In 1698 nine cordwainers signed or made their mark: Thomas Hall, Christopher Steadman, Joseph Simpson, William Perkin, John Trueman, Robert Weemes, John Wilson, Michael Appleby and Robert Brownless, along with the currier Robert Hall and the borough bailiff Richard Hilton. There were only six signatories in 1710 and 1711, Weemes, Simpson and Appleby as before, along with John Loftus, William Lainge and Lawrence Ridsdale, with Thomas Hall for the curriers.
Many of the apprenticeships recorded involve pauper children being trained in a leather trade. George Belwood'
a poor child', was bound for seven years in 1699 to Benjamin Clink, cordwainer, the master being threatened with a penalty of £5 should he fail to perform his duty. A widow's son, Christopher Nesham, was sent to Michael Appleby, cordwainer, in 1701 under threat of the same penalty.
Is there anyone researching the Appleby Family of Darlington, County Durham for this period.

- Mary Augusta Applebee -- Joyce Wafford, 09:51:33 06/02/03 Mon
Looking for any information on my MARY AUGUSTA APPLEBEE. She was born about 1854, in Wellsville, Allegany County, New York. I do not have her parents names. She married ANSON ABRYAM ADAMS on February 24, 1879 in Hamilton, Van Buren County Michigan.
I know that they moved to Winlock, Washington and that they had a son, Ole A. Adams born May 23, 1892.
Then I have found them in Dawson, Alaska in 1900, during the Gold Rush. From there, they are no where to be found.
Their son, Ole, is found in Coos County, Oregon on the 1920 US Census, but I cannot find Augusta or Anson Adams at all.
Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

- TOMAS APPLEBY - YORKSHIRE -- Barbara Thomas, 23:42:27 04/06/03 Sun
I am trying to find out more about my husband's grandfather, Thomas Appleby.
The 1881 Census shows him aged 8 living as a boarder with a Mr & Mrs Haycroft in Goathland, Yorkshire which is also his place of birth.
In 1901 he was living in Langar, Nottinghamshire, married to Margaret (nee Darlow) with a son Hector aged 10 months. Hector is shown as having been born in Norfolk so the family obviously moved about a bit. I do know that by 1914 they were living in the London area.
Does this ring any bells with anyone?

- Joseph Appleby -- Daphne Eyers, 16:48:37 01/29/03 Wed
Joseph Appleby married Margaret Hutchins 7-6-1835 at St John the Baptist, Shoreditch. On 1851 Census his place of birth looks as if it could be Warwickshire, Moreton and on 1871 Census as if it could be just Warwickshire. From ages given he was born around 1811 and when his children were baptised he variously gave his name as Joseph or George. They lived in Hackney.
Does anyone have a family from Warwickshire that he could belong to and who perhaps moved to London in the early 1800s. He was a labourer.

- APPLEBY - Sheffield Flood 1864 -- Karen Lightowler, 16:11:51 05/11/02 Sat
Hi
I am researching the Sheffield Flood (12th March 1864) and am trying to locate the graves of as many of the victims as possible, with a view to then further researching their family line.
Three members of the APPLEBY family, from Hillsborough in Sheffield, were drowned : Mary (age 63) and her 2 children, John C (age 32) and Mary (age 13). John was the owner of a shop at Hillsborough that was partly partially destroyed by the flood.
They are all recorded as being buried at General Cemetery in Sheffield and the Friends of General Cemetery have very kindly supplied me with a list of flood victims from their database (non-conformists only) but the Appleby’s are not listed.
Does anyone, by any chance, think the above may be related to their family line? If so, I would love to hear from you.
Thanks to all in anticipation of your reply.
Best Regards
Karen Lightowler

- James Appleby -- Charles Picot, 23:58:00 12/19/01 Wed
I'm looking for information on my great-grandfather Alexander Appleby born in Bathurst, New Brunswick (Canada) on March 4, 1839 (died in Bathurst May 4, 1909). He was the son of James Appleby and Mary Butler. Little is known of his parents since by the age of 15 he was adopted by a Doucet family. We know that he kept a close contact with a Peter Appleby from the Gaspé coast. Peter was married to Ellen Martin and was believed to have been a Loyalist. Was Peter a cousin or an uncle?
The two names appear in the Muster Roll of Captain Van Allen in the 4th Battalion of the New Jersey Volunteers in 1778. Is it possible that there is a link there.
Family lore said that Alex was of Irish origin but this has never been proven.
Any assistance appreciated.

- Ivan Dale Appleby killed in Vietnam ... -- Colin Appleby, 17:22:50 02/23/04 Mon
Found this entry on the Internet. Have a recollection that someone on Appleby Research found a Dogtag in Vietnam for Ivan Dale Appleby. Anyone remember the entry of a few years ago.
Name: Ivan Dale Appleby
Rank/Branch: O4/US Air Force
Unit: 555th Tactical Fighter Squadron, Ubon AF TH
Date of Birth: 13 September 1930
Home City of Record: Fresno CA (Family in AZ, CO)
Date of Loss: 07 October 1967
Country of Loss: North Vietnam
Loss Coordinates: 204000N 1050800E (WH156796)
Status (in 1973): Missing In Action
Category: 2
Acft/Vehicle/Ground: F4D
Other Personnel In Incident: William R. Austin (Returned POW)
Source: Compiled by Homecoming II Project 31 April 1990 from one or more of the following: raw data from U.S. Government agency sources, correspondence with POW/MIA families, published sources, interviews.
UPDATE: REMAINS RETURNED 01/95, IDENTIFIED 10/95
SYNOPSIS: Major Ivan D. Appleby was the pilot of an F4D aircraft flying a photo
reconnaissance escort mission over North Vietnam in October 1967. His backseater
was Capt. William R. Austin II. Austin and Appleby were onboard the lead
aircraft in a flight of F4D Phantom fighter jets.
When the flight was over Hoi Binh Province about 25 miles southwest of the city
of Hoi Binh, it encountered intense hostile fire which inflicted heavy damage to
the lead aircraft. The aircraft began burning and went out of control. One
parachute was observed prior to the aircraft crashing into a hill.
The U.S. later learned that Austin had been captured, but Appleby's fate
remained uncertain. He was listed Missing in Action.
When American prisoners were released in 1973, Austin was among them, but
Appleby was not. In late 1976, based on no information to indicate he was alive,
Appleby was presumptively declared dead.
Nearly 2500 Americans did not come home from the war in Vietnam. Unlike "MIAs"
from previous wars, most of these men and women can be accounted for. Some
hundred were known to be held as prisoners, and some were photographed in
captivity. Others were alive and well the last time they were heard from,
describing an advancing enemy.
Years after our military involvement ended, reports of Americans held captive
continue to mount. Thousands of reports have been received related to Americans
missing in Southeast Asia, and many government officials now believe that
hundreds are still being held prisoner. The U.S. Government continues to press
the Vietnamese for information, as it has for nearly 20 years. The U.S. views
the problem as humanitarian, while the Vietnamese are concerned with
reconstruction aid promised by the United States in signed agreements, but not
delivered. Until we are willing to negotiate for their release, these Americans
will die in communist prisons wondering why their country abandoned them.
Ivan D. Appleby was promoted to the rank of Colonel during the period he was
maintained missing.
* DIA Homecoming (Egress Recap), April 24, 1973 quotes returnee William Austin
saying "After being hit by SAM, lost hydraulics, aircraft started to roll,
unable to control with rudder or ailerons. Aircraft CO ordered bailout. After
I bailed out, I did not see a chute or hear from Maj. Appleby again. I did
observe what I believe to be the aircraft impact approx 3-5 miles from where I
landed."

- British Chaplaincy in St.Petersburg, Russia -- Ingo Herbst, 18:20:19 01/14/04 Wed
Some of my forefathers in the 18th century were British citizens, living in St. Petersburg in Russia. I got information, that their birth, marriages and death might be found in the documents of the British Chaplaincy of St. Petersburg.
Does somebody, reading my message, know where these documents or copies of them could be found?
I would be very pleased for any comment.

- Marrianne Emily Appleby born St. Petersburg, Russia, USSR. -- Colin Appleby, 00:58:21 02/25/01 Sun
It was with some amazement that I found the following entry in the IGI.
Marianne Emily Appleby, christened 1 Sept 1832 British Chaplaincy, St. Petersburg, Russia, Ussr.
Parents: Father Charles Appleby, Mothe Sarah.
Batch number C950011.
Also found : Charles Appleby married Sarah Kirkby on 24 April 1828 at Cathedral Saint Peter. Sheffield, Yorkshire, England.
Were Charles and Sarah the parents of Marianne Emily Appleby.
There were some Stonemasons recruited to work on the Palace at St. Petersburg, Ussr about that time.
Has anyone got links with this family.
