- Michael Appleby - Cordwainer of Darlington circa 1600's ....... -- Colin Appleby, 17:07:28 09/05/03 Fri (195.229.241.228)
Extracts from The Leather Industry from c. 1600 Darlington County Durham by Gillian Cookson.
The 1574 agreement, periodically reaffirmed with a free dinner of the company, was signed by master cordwainers and by one representative of the curriers. In 1698 nine cordwainers signed or made their mark: Thomas Hall, Christopher Steadman, Joseph Simpson, William Perkin, John Trueman, Robert Weemes, John Wilson, Michael Appleby and Robert Brownless, along with the currier Robert Hall and the borough bailiff Richard Hilton. There were only six signatories in 1710 and 1711, Weemes, Simpson and Appleby as before, along with John Loftus, William Lainge and Lawrence Ridsdale, with Thomas Hall for the curriers.
Many of the apprenticeships recorded involve pauper children being trained in a leather trade. George Belwood'
a poor child', was bound for seven years in 1699 to Benjamin Clink, cordwainer, the master being threatened with a penalty of £5 should he fail to perform his duty. A widow's son, Christopher Nesham, was sent to Michael Appleby, cordwainer, in 1701 under threat of the same penalty.
Is there anyone researching the Appleby Family of Darlington, County Durham for this period.

- Mary Augusta Applebee -- Joyce Wafford, 09:51:33 06/02/03 Mon (66.189.153.10)
Looking for any information on my MARY AUGUSTA APPLEBEE. She was born about 1854, in Wellsville, Allegany County, New York. I do not have her parents names. She married ANSON ABRYAM ADAMS on February 24, 1879 in Hamilton, Van Buren County Michigan.
I know that they moved to Winlock, Washington and that they had a son, Ole A. Adams born May 23, 1892.
Then I have found them in Dawson, Alaska in 1900, during the Gold Rush. From there, they are no where to be found.
Their son, Ole, is found in Coos County, Oregon on the 1920 US Census, but I cannot find Augusta or Anson Adams at all.
Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

I am trying to find out more about my husband's grandfather, Thomas Appleby.
The 1881 Census shows him aged 8 living as a boarder with a Mr & Mrs Haycroft in Goathland, Yorkshire which is also his place of birth.
In 1901 he was living in Langar, Nottinghamshire, married to Margaret (nee Darlow) with a son Hector aged 10 months. Hector is shown as having been born in Norfolk so the family obviously moved about a bit. I do know that by 1914 they were living in the London area.
Does this ring any bells with anyone?

- Joseph Appleby -- Daphne Eyers, 16:48:37 01/29/03 Wed (195.92.168.165)
Joseph Appleby married Margaret Hutchins 7-6-1835 at St John the Baptist, Shoreditch. On 1851 Census his place of birth looks as if it could be Warwickshire, Moreton and on 1871 Census as if it could be just Warwickshire. From ages given he was born around 1811 and when his children were baptised he variously gave his name as Joseph or George. They lived in Hackney.
Does anyone have a family from Warwickshire that he could belong to and who perhaps moved to London in the early 1800s. He was a labourer.

- APPLEBY - Sheffield Flood 1864 -- Karen Lightowler, 16:11:51 05/11/02 Sat (195.93.34.167)
Hi
I am researching the Sheffield Flood (12th March 1864) and am trying to locate the graves of as many of the victims as possible, with a view to then further researching their family line.
Three members of the APPLEBY family, from Hillsborough in Sheffield, were drowned : Mary (age 63) and her 2 children, John C (age 32) and Mary (age 13). John was the owner of a shop at Hillsborough that was partly partially destroyed by the flood.
They are all recorded as being buried at General Cemetery in Sheffield and the Friends of General Cemetery have very kindly supplied me with a list of flood victims from their database (non-conformists only) but the Appleby’s are not listed.
Does anyone, by any chance, think the above may be related to their family line? If so, I would love to hear from you.
Thanks to all in anticipation of your reply.
Best Regards
Karen Lightowler

I'm looking for information on my great-grandfather Alexander Appleby born in Bathurst, New Brunswick (Canada) on March 4, 1839 (died in Bathurst May 4, 1909). He was the son of James Appleby and Mary Butler. Little is known of his parents since by the age of 15 he was adopted by a Doucet family. We know that he kept a close contact with a Peter Appleby from the Gaspé coast. Peter was married to Ellen Martin and was believed to have been a Loyalist. Was Peter a cousin or an uncle?
The two names appear in the Muster Roll of Captain Van Allen in the 4th Battalion of the New Jersey Volunteers in 1778. Is it possible that there is a link there.
Family lore said that Alex was of Irish origin but this has never been proven.
Any assistance appreciated.

- William Appleby b.1806 Doncaster, Yorks and relatives -- Evelyn Wilcock, 00:46:16 02/25/01 Sun (203.12.165.8)
My late father spent many years researching an Appleby family. Miss Annie Appleby 1838-1915 ( in her will) said she was the cousin of my gt grandfather, but we never succeeded in finding the connection.
Annie Appleby was the daughter of William Appleby 1806-1883 and his wife Ann. This William Appleby and three of his brothers were born in Doncaster, children of John Appleby and his wife Susan Hicks. One brother Henry, was a publican in London who died young. His widow remarried, a member of Hughes family in Pluckley and later of Sandwich, Kent.
I am particularly interested in finding the connection to my own family and the name of William Appleby's wife Ann who was born 1807 in London.
I would like to know more about a Winifred Appleby who married Joseph West in London in 1834. (this marriage is on the IGI), My Grandfather's name was West.
My father left a file of detailed Appleby research and searches, and "unrelated" Appleby British birth marriage and death certificates, if someone from the one name study group would care to contact me.

- Appleby Query! -- Mr. Herbert S. Norris, 23:01:43 02/24/01 Sat (203.12.165.8)
APPLEBY family Query:
Source References:
(ref. a) -- Records of Births and Deaths in the Town of Bridgton, Cumberland Co., Maine, page - 92
(ref. b) --1870 U.S. Census, KY, Greenup Co., Pct. #2, sheet. 51, Line 39 & 40 plus four lines on the next page.
(ref. c) -- Isabell (nee Appleby) NORRIS’ certified of death from Hennepin County, Minnesota.
(ref. d) -- Church of Jesus Christ Latter Day Saints, International Genealogy Index
Isabell Appleby and Alfred Baldwin NORRIS are my great-grandparents. I would like to learn more about my second great-parents: i.e. Isabell’s parents: Francis (Frank) Appleby, born c. 1823 in England, (ref. a & b) and Frank’s spouse ELIZABETH _?_ born c.1827 Scotland (ref. b & c).
Frank and Elizabeth are the parents of (1) Henrietta born a.1844, (2) Elizabeth, born .June 21 1846, (3) Isabella (Belle) APPLEBY, born: Oct 16 1847, (4) Eleanor M. (or Helen) born Sep 06 1849, per (ref. a). Reference (b) shows child (5) Albert F. as being born a.1853 in Maine, and (6) Charles M. born a.1867, Kentucky. My Great Grandmother Isabella Appleby died in Minneapolis, Hennepin Co., Minnesota on January 09 1890, per (ref. c).
My research has found extracted data on a FRANCIS APPLEBY born Oct. 05, 1823 in Sunderland, Durham, England, a son of WILLIAM APPLEBY and wife MARY MACINTOSH in the IGI (ref. d). I personally "feel" confident that William and Mary are the parents of my Francis Appleby. But, I have no proof documents to link, or disprove that William and Mary’s son Francis Appleby born in England to the one who fathered four daughters in Montreal, Quebec, Canada, except for compatible dates of birth information between (ref. a) and (ref. b).
Is there anyone reading this query who could confirm or put to rest my suspicions and theories on the FRANCIS APPLEBY who’s parents are WILLIAM APPLEBY and MARY MACINTOSH? Even communication with any descendants of any of the above listed Appleby’s would a pleasure.
Mr. Herbert S. Norris

- Family Crests/Coats of Arms -- Don Heath, 03:17:26 02/24/01 Sat (203.12.165.8)
I am a teacher of seven children with special needs. They are in my class because of their inability to maintain acceptable levels of behavior in order to participate in the General Education classroom environment. I have introduced the subject of Heritage and Family Coats of Arms to them and they have responded well (usually they are not interested in learning anything). Because of their interest I told them that I would try to find if there is a Family Crest or Coat of Arms for each of their names. They are quite enthused and I would not like to disappoint them by failing to find these for them. Most of these children are Emotionally Disturbed and/or Learning Disabled. All but one is on at least one kind of medication to be able to function reasonably (in a loose sense) in my classroom which is specifically for Behavior Adjustment. This is a long story, but, I am hoping that I can find someone who can provide a brief history and the crest or coat of arms for each of "my kids". As a teacher my resources are pretty scarce so I'm hoping to be able to receive the info at no cost. If this is not possible, then, please tell me what the lowest cost can be. Your early help on this matter is truly appreciated. My students' names are:
Amaro, Justin
Gray, Gary
Hess, Tj
Pate, Daniel
Roeder, Casey
Toepperwein, Jake
Thank you for all your help.
