No. 1--Just want to thank you for putting my query on your board, so quick! No. 2--I want to let you know that I found who I was looking for. Just minutes after I put that query on your board, I clicked in their name --and there they were! All about William Appleby being a professor at the School of Mines, in Minneapolis, Minn. I'm just waiting patiently, to hear back from the message I sent to whomever it was that put the article on the internet, in the first place. We would be 2nd or 3rd cousins and have alot of catching up to do, especially in family history. Thanks again! Pauline Albers

- Catharine Applyby m: Samuel G. Smith of McKean co. PA -- Kelly Smith, 06:42:06 06/18/01 Mon
CATHARINE APPLEBY married Samuel G. Smith in PA.
He was born in 1805 in McKean County PA, Big Island.
I do not have a marriage date on them or her birthdate place or origin. I am looking for both of their parents and as much info as I can get on her.
She had one child Samuel Graves Smith that was born in PA and that lived to maturity. On her stone is listed two children that died in 1858 within two days of each other - one being 3 years old and the other being 6.
It states on her stone that she died in her 68th year of age. She died in 1876. Buried in LINN County , Buffalo TWp cemetery, Hiawatha, Iowa. This is located near Cedar Rapids, Ia. She lived in the Covington, Iowa area and has her descendents buried at a local Covington cemetery.
I would be her great great great granddaughter.
I have just begun searching for my roots and am being drawn to the women of our family especially. And wouldn't you know they'd be the hardest to find info on.
If anyone has a CATHARINE APPLYBY born in the early 1800's please contact me. Or if the Applyby / Smith and PA. connection sounds familiar e-mail me at

- Appleby Family Query -- Mr. Herbert S. Norris, 05:57:00 05/13/01 Sun
Hello to all of you Appleby Surname researchers,
I am trying to prove or disprove that FRANCIS APPLEBY, born October 05, 1823 in Sunderland, Durham, England, the son of WILLIAM APPLEBY, born July 30, 1784 and MARY McINTOSH, born May 20, 1805 in Scotland, is or is not the same “Francis Appleby, born c.1823”, who fathered four daughters in Quebec, Canada between Feb. 1844 and Sept. 1849. Birth records show that the oldest child, a daughter, was born in “Montreal” and the other three daughters are listed as being born in “Quebec”, from a record of births and deaths in the town of Bridgton, Columbia Co., Maine, USA.
My great grandmother’s death record shows that she, ISABELLA (nee Appleby) NORRIS’s, was born in Quebec, Canada. Her father, FRANCIS APPLEBY, was born “about 1823” in England and her mother Elizabeth, was born “about 1826 in Scotland.
Isabella has two brothers born in the United States, Albert F. Appleby born about 1853 in Maine and Charles M. Appleby born about 1867 in Kentucky. Per the 1870 U.S. Census for Greenup Co., Kentucky.
Note: My Appleby family records first show up in: “Records of Births and Deaths in the Town of Bridgton, County of Cumberland, State of Main, page 92.”
Can anyone point me in the correct direction so I might find information on how and when my 2nd Great Grandfather married, and departed England or Scotland and arrived on the North American continent? At least his spouse shows up in Montreal, Quebec on March 2, 1844, when their first child was born.
Thank You for reading this message!

I was born Carolyn Appleby in Homestead, FL in 1945. My father's name is James Melvin Appleby. I believe he was born in Pennsylvania. I am researching that info now. My Appleby ancestry began in Scotland with Robert B. Gordon (no dates) who married Janet Hill (no dates). They had at least one child, Fanny L. Gordon born Jan. 6, 1876. She married James Appleby (born April 17, 1875) on May 29, 1895 in Greensburg, PA. I have a James C. Appleby listed in my family bible with a date of death of September 12, 1914. Also listed in my bible is Janet Appleby who was born Feb. 17, 1897 who died February 24, 1900; Robert William Appleby born Jan. 14, 1988 and died Jan. 8, 1917; Albert E. Appleby born November 20, 1900 who married Leona Debolt on October 14, 1919 (my paternal grandparents); Gordon Linford Appleby born March 20, 1903 who married Hazel G. Stephen on April 19, 1938. Date of death for Gordon L. Appleby is listed as Sunday, May 21 at 10:00 a.m.(no year. The notation reads as follows: . . . "taken to Pittsburgh to L. B. Morelands. Services Tuesday 8 pm May 23. Taken to Clarksburg, W.VA May 24." Do any of these names ring any Appleby bells? If so, I would love to hear from you. So far I have made very little progress. I do know my gr grandmother died in 1968 and I have her SS# which was issued in Pennsylvania.

My late father spent many years researching an Appleby family. Miss Annie Appleby 1838-1915 ( in her will) said she was the cousin of my gt grandfather, but we never succeeded in finding the connection.
Annie Appleby was the daughter of William Appleby 1806-1883 and his wife Ann. This William Appleby and three of his brothers were born in Doncaster, children of John Appleby and his wife Susan Hicks. One brother Henry, was a publican in London who died young. His widow remarried, a member of Hughes family in Pluckley and later of Sandwich, Kent.
I am particularly interested in finding the connection to my own family and the name of William Appleby's wife Ann who was born 1807 in London.
I would like to know more about a Winifred Appleby who married Joseph West in London in 1834. (this marriage is on the IGI), My Grandfather's name was West.
My father left a file of detailed Appleby research and searches, and "unrelated" Appleby British birth marriage and death certificates, if someone from the one name study group would care to contact me.

- Henry APPLEBY -- Jim Eberle, 00:32:42 02/25/01 Sun
My ggrandmother Florence APPLEBY married Joseph Ridgway SWAIN at St. George, Hanover Square, London on April 19, 1892. The marriage certificate shows her age as 33 and her current residence as Buckingham Palace Road, but I don't know if this was a permanent address, or (perhaps because they had only come to London for the wedding) merely that of their temporary lodging. Joseph gave his residence as Maids Moreton, Bucks, so she may have hailed from there as well.
Florence's father Henry witnessed the auspicious event, along with an Elizabeth Appleby (her mother?) and one 'A. Appleby', but this is all I know for sure about my APPLEBY line.
Anybody see any connections with their own lines?
Thanks in advance.

- Appleby Query! -- Mr. Herbert S. Norris, 23:01:43 02/24/01 Sat
APPLEBY family Query:
Source References:
(ref. a) -- Records of Births and Deaths in the Town of Bridgton, Cumberland Co., Maine, page - 92
(ref. b) --1870 U.S. Census, KY, Greenup Co., Pct. #2, sheet. 51, Line 39 & 40 plus four lines on the next page.
(ref. c) -- Isabell (nee Appleby) NORRIS’ certified of death from Hennepin County, Minnesota.
(ref. d) -- Church of Jesus Christ Latter Day Saints, International Genealogy Index
Isabell Appleby and Alfred Baldwin NORRIS are my great-grandparents. I would like to learn more about my second great-parents: i.e. Isabell’s parents: Francis (Frank) Appleby, born c. 1823 in England, (ref. a & b) and Frank’s spouse ELIZABETH _?_ born c.1827 Scotland (ref. b & c).
Frank and Elizabeth are the parents of (1) Henrietta born a.1844, (2) Elizabeth, born .June 21 1846, (3) Isabella (Belle) APPLEBY, born: Oct 16 1847, (4) Eleanor M. (or Helen) born Sep 06 1849, per (ref. a). Reference (b) shows child (5) Albert F. as being born a.1853 in Maine, and (6) Charles M. born a.1867, Kentucky. My Great Grandmother Isabella Appleby died in Minneapolis, Hennepin Co., Minnesota on January 09 1890, per (ref. c).
My research has found extracted data on a FRANCIS APPLEBY born Oct. 05, 1823 in Sunderland, Durham, England, a son of WILLIAM APPLEBY and wife MARY MACINTOSH in the IGI (ref. d). I personally "feel" confident that William and Mary are the parents of my Francis Appleby. But, I have no proof documents to link, or disprove that William and Mary’s son Francis Appleby born in England to the one who fathered four daughters in Montreal, Quebec, Canada, except for compatible dates of birth information between (ref. a) and (ref. b).
Is there anyone reading this query who could confirm or put to rest my suspicions and theories on the FRANCIS APPLEBY who’s parents are WILLIAM APPLEBY and MARY MACINTOSH? Even communication with any descendants of any of the above listed Appleby’s would a pleasure.

- Wickham, NB, Canada -- Wendy, 03:57:30 02/24/01 Sat
I am trying to locate the ancestors of Adoniron Judson Appleby, born in Wickham, Queens Co, NB, circa 1865. His parents are William and Isabelle (or possibly Jane) Akerly. His mother left the home when he was 4-5, and eventually he was raised by another local family. He became a seaman, and although owning a farm in that area, would go to sea, leaving his wife and children behind. In 189- the vessel he was on, The Dion, was wrecked off Watch Hill, Rhode Island. Following that, he remained at home with his family until his death in the early 1900s.
Would appreciate any info you might have on this family.

- Family Crests/Coats of Arms -- Don Heath, 03:17:26 02/24/01 Sat
I am a teacher of seven children with special needs. They are in my class because of their inability to maintain acceptable levels of behavior in order to participate in the General Education classroom environment. I have introduced the subject of Heritage and Family Coats of Arms to them and they have responded well (usually they are not interested in learning anything). Because of their interest I told them that I would try to find if there is a Family Crest or Coat of Arms for each of their names. They are quite enthused and I would not like to disappoint them by failing to find these for them. Most of these children are Emotionally Disturbed and/or Learning Disabled. All but one is on at least one kind of medication to be able to function reasonably (in a loose sense) in my classroom which is specifically for Behavior Adjustment. This is a long story, but, I am hoping that I can find someone who can provide a brief history and the crest or coat of arms for each of "my kids". As a teacher my resources are pretty scarce so I'm hoping to be able to receive the info at no cost. If this is not possible, then, please tell me what the lowest cost can be. Your early help on this matter is truly appreciated. My students' names are:
